Moving Tips – Where to Find Quality Moving Quotes from Qualified Moving Companies
One of the most critical aspects of your move is probably one you haven’t considered: good relations with the moving companies that you work with. Because moving is a logistical challenge with lots of moving parts, heavy labor and sometimes stressed emotions, it’s important that you follow certain guidelines when dealing with the movers. The most important is communication — from start to end.
1. When you get quotes, make sure they know EXACTLY what you need moved. You can’t give too much information. Also be clear about your expectations for when you’d like your items picked up and when you’d like them delivered. You’ll most likely be given a window for delivery — make sure you’re absolutely clear of what it is, and make sure it matches what’s in your contract. And make sure the moving companies know exactly the layout of your current and new home — if the moving company has to climb stairs or do a long carry, that will likely add to your costs and it’s best to know that right away.
2. Communication goes both ways: make sure you know exactly what kinds of charges you’ll face, particularly packing costs. Some moving companies charge for items like moving blankets and shrink wrap; this will add to the cost of your move, and you need to be aware of it when planning.
3. On moving day, your movers need to know exactly what you want moved. The movers will assume everything needs to go, in which case items you planned to carry yourself might get loaded up by accident. Make sure these items are kept separately, and preferably outside of the house, either in a car or at a neighbors.
4. If something comes up that changes your move date, contact your mover immediately. Moving is complicated, and a last-minute cancellation can often mean lost money for the movers.
5. The mover also needs to know about any items that require special crating or other services. Certain jobs, like appliance servicing, crating of large glass or marble pieces, and disassembly of items such as gym equipment or large outdoor play sets, require a third party’s help. As part of this, let the movers know the most important items to you, like heirlooms, antiques, memorabilia, and any items that cannot be replaced — and be sure to ask the moving company about moving insurance for these items.)
6. Finally, give your movers a break when something unforeseen goes awry. Being a mover isn’t easy — it takes a great deal of physical strength but with a gentle touch.
